rampART Evicted: the priest and the chainsaw

The rampART Social Centre was evicted Tuesday 15th October at 5:30am by police, bailiffs and a priest.

After over 5 years and many eviction scares it has finally happened… 3 people and a dog were inside when police attempted to chanisaw the door. They also had climbers going up to the roof conjuring up memories of the raid during the G20 in April. Police blocked the entrance to all three roads leading to the social centre with vans and their bodies preventing anyone getting close to the building. They are handing out a piece of paper with a telephone number to call to get belongings out of the building. If you are able to help move or store stuff please contact the rampART collective – rampart@mutualaid.org.

CALL OUT help with South London’s Library House

South London’s Library House Social Centre Needs YOU!

On the 17th it will be a year that the Library House in Camberwell has been open as one of the few squatted social spaces in south london and we’d like to mark that with a call out for new faces, new ideas and new energy! The Library House runs regular weekly events and also hosts parties, gigs and benefits and we need help to run all of these. Our collective meets on tuesdays at 8pm where we discuss everything about the running of the social centre and it’s a good place to start for anyone who wants to come down to get involved.

Although we’ve had a good run of it we’re never sure of how long we’ll actually have here, so come down while you can. It would also be great if there were a crew ready to run another social centre when this project passes on, and the Library House would be a great place to meet likeminded people interested in running a social centre, something south london is sorely lacking in…

Check out our blog http://thelibraryhouse.wordpress.com/ or just pop down. We’re at 52 Knatchbull Road, behind Minet Library. Tuesdays at 8pm are best, or just come round and say hi when you can.

Hope to see you soon…

Non Commercial House CALL OUT to share the fun!!

NCHmainspace

NCHfrontNCHfrontfirstweek

This place is basically a giant Free Shop, for people to share, recycle what they dont need, take what they need. It is an amazing and very succesful project that started just over 3 months ago. It is also a very uplifting example of an anti-capitalist and anti-hierarchy pro-active stand. Not only rejecting what we see as a source of misery in our world (capitalism and all that…) but creating alternatives, directly, with our own tiny little hands! Direct action as a bunch of people simply getting together and doing what they want to do, and having fun doing it! :)

It is opened to the public from Friday to Sunday 12-8pm.

There are also some regular events (like Spanish lessons, fillm screenings, discussions, workshops…)
check http://london.indymedia.org/groups/non-commercial-house for update

NCHKidsNCHopening

Unfortunately, and its not unusual, the project relies on a small number of people. If you want to get involved and/or propose any event, give a hand in maintaining the space or just hang around, then come along on any open day or to our weekly “getting together” on tuesdays 7pm!

hope to see you soon

##VHS Video Basement## Social Space

****================****
VHS VIDEO BASEMENT
**===================**

A new social space / free picture house has opened in the heart of Soho, London UK.
Just off Oxford Street at 9 Great Chapel Street, we are occupying an old English language school and have converted the basement into a temporary cinema. It is called the VHS Video Basement. We are running a two week long program from 13 – 24 July of midnight screenings, mini film festivals and film workshops until our trial date. A full schedule is available on our website at http://ohninesoho.blogspot.com

Please contact us and get involved. We have a gallery on the ground floor and access to the roof, so if you want to show work in the gallery show a film or run a workshop, get in touch. We have an open dinner each night at 6.30pm. You can phone 07962483750, 07939651331 or just ring all the buzzers, as someone is always in.

We plan to continue opening derelict makeshift picture houses. We believe in DIY cinema, in a makeshift self-propelled incessant cinema of desire. The British film industry is stale and addicted to formula and art cinemas that show alternatives are over priced. The VHS Video Basement is an alternative, a true social space where the power of a collective cinema can be rediscovered.

Non-commercial House is open for non-business…

The freeschool weekender on housing, squatting and gentrification has been and gone. It was a great success and it has left a beautiful building just waiting for another project to begin. So we call on all those interested in starting up a space to come and get involved…

People expressed an interest incontinuing occupying in order to create a space that complemented the pre-existing projects in East London. With LARC, rampART, freedom, ASS and Belgrade Road all within close proximity we felt a giant free shop would be a nice idea. The building suits it with huge shop windows. Within such close proximity to the centre of finance a daytime space that promotes community without consumerism seems like a pleasant idea. A strong focus could be on attracting a crowd that wouldn’t generally go into squats and social centres by possibly making a space drug free (including alcohol and smoke) and having more family friendly activities. A free bicycle workshop will bring in peddlers by off the street and into the space (or the yard at least….) Regular workshops, infonights, cafes and a food coop were amongst other things discussed.

Bring items you no longer require that are clogging up your home. Take stuff you need that someone else has abandoned. Come along to get help fixing your bicycle…

We live in a society of over consumption and waste. Non Commercial House aims to offer an alternative based upon cooperation, mutual respect and sustainable living. It is not only about objects but about sharing! We hope to have various workshops and discussions taking place over the coming weeks.

Children are very welcome within the space.. we are hoping to have a kids section of the free shop with free toys / clothes and hold family friendly events.

The ground floor is wheelchair accessible. However, the only toilet in the building is on the top floor and not.

Items can be dropped off anytime; knock on the door or leave them out front.

This is a non-profit, non-hierarchical space open to all and your input is valued so drop by some time to get involved and let us know what your ideas / thoughts are.

We hope to see you soon!

SQUATS & AUTONOMOUS SPACES CALLOUT – 18-19TH SEPT 2009

This is a call out to people involved in squats and autonomous spaces for
2 days of direct action on the 18th & 19th of September 2009 around
housing and the creation of more autonomous spaces at this time of crisis.

————————————————-

As the global economy grinds to a halt so too do the big capital
development projects, luxury apartment blocks and shopping complexes that
have threatened us with displacement for so long.

Meanwhile, this new round of crisis capitalism leaves thousands out of
work, buried in debt and facing immanent home repossession. Instead of
housing the homeless in these empties or canceling the debts of millions
governments pump billions into the banks to save this rotten system and
violently repress those that resist.

As a movement we have been on the back-foot for too long – now its time to
start taking things back – to kick capitalism while its down and liberate
the land from privatised enclosure; to take housing and create space where
we can live outside of monetary exchange, share skills acquired through
struggle thus far and reach out beyond our practiced modes of resistance
to a proactive attack.

From Dijon to Berlin to the thousands of places where actions took place
in defence of squats and autonomous spaces in April 2008 a process has
begun, new groups have formed, networks grown, and more people have become
involved. As a movement we recognise that power and domination must be
contested at multiple sites – this is beauty of our mode of struggle and
why we call for decentralised, coordinated and confrontational action on
the on the 18th & 19th of September 2009.

ORGANISE YOUR RAGE – OCCUPY, RESIST, CREATE!

>From the UK National Squatters Meet-up Bristol 14th/15th March 2009.
